Instead of waiting in line at airport check-in desks in order to fly abroad to enjoy a break this year, you may prefer to stay in Ireland and see many of the sights that are on your own doorstep.

If you are hoping to have a holiday that will not stretch your finances then a road trip around the Emerald Isle may be the ideal trip for you. Swapping long flights for scenic journeys where the rolling countryside glides past is likely to be tempting, while bed and breakfasts can offer you affordable accommodation. Many people may like to head towards the Ring of Kerry in the South West of the country, which is a popular driving route that is studded with spectacular sights.

The tour takes you deep into the Iveragh Peninsula, where you can stop off on blue flag beaches and in quaint towns. Killarney in County Kerry is the most popular starting point to begin the Ring of Kerry trip and offers many sightseeing opportunities for those wishing to holiday at home. From here you can tour the town at your own pace and visit many of the historic buildings in the area. These include Killarney Courthouse, the Old Monastery and the Franciscan Friary, which were all constructed in the 1800s.

After enjoying the ambiance of the town you may like to get on the road and take in the vast views of the stunning countryside. By car the Ring of Kerry route can take a day or longer depending on your own schedule. Heading west from the town, you can take your vehicle deeper into the peninsula where you will be greeted by the towering Macgillycuddy’s Reek peaks, where you may also be able to spot Ireland’s tallest peak Carrauntoohil. Keen walkers often stop off near here in order to scale the range and get far reaching views of the surrounding landscape.

Driving onwards from here you can continue to the spectacular coastline, which is home to Dingle Bay’s blue flag beaches that are washed with the Atlantic’s crashing waves. For even more picturesque views you can drive to the village of Sneem where families stop off to enjoy its peaceful atmosphere and festivals. As you journey back towards Killarney, Kenmare is another town on the route that attracts many visitors each year who are charmed by its setting and shops.

You can then choose to continue your trip back towards Killarney in order to complete the Ring of Kerry experience. Before you set out on your budget holiday, it is recommended that your vehicle is in good working order and that you have car insurance to protect you from costly incidences, so you can fully enjoy your break.
