Situated on the west bank of Cork Harbour, Passage West is a thriving port town in County Cork. The town is located 19 km away from the County Cork and 6 km from Cork City suburbs. Passage West overlooks the West Channel, through which Lough Mahon pours into the Lower Harbour. Around 4,824 people inhabit this town, while around 851 individuals live in the environs of Passage West.
Owing to the new housing development in recent years and unique setting of the town, it has developed as one of the principal residential areas in County Cork. In ancient times, Passage West was refereed to as a small fishing village. Presently, the town functions as the port of national importance. It is also renowned as the ship-building centre of European. Within 100 years, the small hamlet of Passage West has developed into a burgeoning holiday resort.
The Royal Victoria Monkstown and Passage Baths is the prominent attraction of the town. Built in 1838, it consisted of two main wings that were linked by a corridor. Southern wing was two storeys, while the northern wing was three storeys high. Hot salt water of the bath was considered good for rheumatism, lumbago, sciatica and similar health conditions, and became popular among locals. However, the baths were neglected and not looked after, which resulted in their poor condition. Today, the corner wall at the southern end stands as the evidence of Royal Victoria Baths.
Apart from this, other popular attractions of the town are Sirius Shaft, the Royal Victoria Dockyard and Steam Packet Quay. Visitors in the town can also see Marmullane Church and Cork, Blackrock & Passage Railway. Marmullane Church holds historical significance, as it is believed to be built by the family of Roches, in the 13th or14th century. After the construction it was handed over to the Vicars Choral of St. Finbarr’s Cathedral of Cork. By 1615, only ruins of the church were left and at present, the graveyard can be seen.
Passage West has a pleasant walking environment that allows visitors to cherish the beauty of the town while strolling on the scenic routes. During summer season, the town is known as an ideal mooring area. The two slipways in the town offer launching facilities. Moreover, the slipway at the Ferrypoint also offers excellent launching facilities. Sailing and coastal rowing can be enjoyed in Passage West Yawl Rowing Club, located close to the centre of the town. Visitors can also indulge in other activities like golf, fishing and bird watching.
Near the mouth of River Lee in County Cork, a natural harbour and a river estuary called Cork Harbour is located. This harbour is renowned as the second largest natural harbour in the world and as Ireland’s second largest port. Apart from being one of the most important industrial areas of Ireland, this harbour is also a popular vacation spot.
Passage West is one of the favourite holiday destinations, located on the western shore of Lower Harbour of Cork. Renowned as one of the most popular towns of County Cork, Passage West offers small town’s quality of life along with the big town’s conveniences.
