Located 20 km north-east of County Dublin, Donabate is a suburban coastal town. The town is situated on a peninsula that lies on the east coast of Ireland between the Rogerstown Estuary and Broadmeadow Estuary. Donabate shares this peninsula with another town, Portrane. Moreover, due to the large sand spits covering the mouth of both estuaries surrounding the town, Donabate has hammer-head shape.
Donabate is basically situated in the administrative county of Fingal that is within County Dublin. In Irish, Donabate is referred to as Domhnach Beathach, which means the church of the living. Until 1912, population of Donabate was only 734. However, with the development of transportation links with Dublin, population has grown significantly. Today, around 7000 individuals reside in the town of Donabate.
The prospering town of Donabate has several heritage buildings that stand as the witness of history of different eras. Of all the historical buildings, St. Patrick’s Church is the most notable and significant. Built in 1903 under the leadership of Fr Magill as Parish Priest, this impressive building has been listed by Fingal County Council for preservation.
Newbridge House is another heritage building in the town that was built in 1736 by Archbishop Cobbe. Presently, the house has over 30 rooms that are well-furnished and are decorated with exquisitely designed antiques. The house also has a beautiful garden, working farm and children’s adventure playground.
Donabate Parish Hall that is counted among the most popular attractions of the town was once a Catholic Church. Until 1903, Parish Hall served as the church, after which was converted into Donabate Parish Hall. This hall is used for conducting meetings and sales of work. Club meetings of the senior citizens of Portrane and Donabate are also held in this hall.
Sports facilities in the town include six golf courses, St. Patrick’s GAA Club Donabate and St. Itas Athletic Football Club. Tourists in the town are also spoilt with the range of water based activities available. For enjoying water sports like kayaking, sailing and wind surfing, beaches like Portrane beach on Rogerstown estuary and Donabate Beach on southern Broadmeadow estuary are ideal spots.
Tourists interested in recreational boating can find marinas in Rush and Malahide. Beaches of Portrane, Rush and Skerries are also offer kite surfing opportunities. Adventure lovers can enjoy bouldering at cliffs between Donabate and Portrane. Equestrian, art of horse riding is also popular in Donabate and furthermore, Corballis Donabate hosts the hunter trials of the Ward Union Hunt. .
Rogerstown Estuary and Broadmeadow Estuary are the paradise for animal lovers, as both of them are inhabited by rich concentration of wildlife. Designated as Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protection Area (SPA), both the areas are famed for preserving wildlife in their natural habitat.
Connectivity of Donabate with Dublin has made it a perfect destination for vacations. Donabate railway station that is served by Northern Commuter line trains connects the town to between Dublin and Dundalk. R126 regional road runs across Donabate and connects the town to R127 and the M1 motorway.
