midleton-0-6411724midleton-0-6411724midleton-2-3321182midleton-4-4810209 Originated in the heart of beautiful East Cork region, Midleton derived its name from Irish ‘Mainistir na Corann’ meaning ‘The Abbey of the Coir’ or “Monastery at the Weir”. This picturesque corner of the county has fascinating historical buildings, scenic places, stories, designer knitwear, interesting antiques along with fine dine to offer.

Dated back to its history to the 12th century, the town came into existence from a monastery which is founded by Cistercian monks. Later in the 19th century, the monastery got destroyed. Preserving much of its heritages like St John the Baptist Church, Jameson Heritage Center, Barryscourt Castle, Mills, Maltings, Warehouses and Kilns, the town beautifully showcase its history. Many of these historic buildings have been beautifully restored to preserve them and create as outstanding visual center.

The most prominent architectural jewel of the town is the Jameson Heritage Center, which started its life as woolen manufacturing unit in 1796. Later in 1820, the fine building was transformed to whiskey manufacturer by three brothers and afterward merged into Irish Distillers. Some of the stories also state that it was here only in Ireland which invented whiskey. Carefully restored, the distillery welcomes everyone to discover the magic of finest Irish whiskey in the relaxing atmosphere of its traditional pub.

Full of historical buildings, the town also has preserved lovingly the Middleton College. One of the oldest schools of Ireland, it is founded by Ellizabeth Villiers in 1696. With over an existence of 300 years, the school has maintained high academic achievements and gifted the world with some of the famed pupils. Another attraction of the town is the imposing red brick and terra-cotta structure, of the AIB bank that was built in 1899. Rose’s Coach Inn, Town Hall and other are some of the finest surviving examples of 17th century architecture.

Adding to the prominent features of the town is the St. John the Baptist Church. From the records dating back 1302, it is believed that the church was also the site of the Cistercian Abbey. Admired for its 166 ft spire, the Holy Rosary church also add to the same. Restored to its ancient glory with restaurants, craft shops and historical exhibitions, the Barryscourt Castle lies to the west of the town at Carrigtwohill. The castle served as a home to barry’s family from 12th to 17 the century.

Midleton’s surrounding is abundant with picturesque villages including Cloyne, which is also the site of the monastery founded by St. Coleman. It is also the location of the Round Towers, with one remaining of the two. Located on the beautiful coast is the Trabolgan holiday village, which is a thriving family fun resort. Turning east, 17th century Castlemartyr welcomes everyone with trout-stocked Lough Aderry. Driving to south one can find exquisite collection of knitwear and pottery in Shanagarry. Home of crafts, the village is also the birth place of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania State. Located to the north of the town is the Dungourney Open and Farm Museum, Cnoc A Ceo Leahy. These places beautifully displays the farm life as it used to be 100 years ago with horse drew machinery, old tools, gardens, animals and an operational water mill.

Midleton is a paradise for all the family with its rich cultural heritage, history, wealth of activities, angling, dine, relaxing walk and nightlife that bounds everyone to love the land.
