In 1207, Kilkenny was chartered as a town by Lord of Leinster, William Marshall. Around the end of 13th century, the control of the town was under Norman-Irish. 1609, was a significant year in the history of Kilkenny when a royal charter by King James I of England granted this place the status of a city.
