Swords formed in 560AD, the county town of Fingal, County Dublin as of 1994 after Dublin County Councils breakup is located roughly 13 Km outside Dublin City Centre and bordered by the rivers Delvin and Tolka while the River Ward flows through it. Swords has many Historical Landmarks dotted around which serve as a reminder of its violent history.
This bloody past that Swords endured was as a result of a thousand or so years of misrule primarily by the Anglo Normans, the English and the Vikings. The District in which Swords resides is Fingal became an Independent Area in the 11th century.
Swords has since grown to be one of County Dublin’s largest commuter towns. This increasing growth can be traced back to the mid 1970s with the building of Rivervalley Estate which is currently Ireland’s largest private housing development, this growth continued over the next three decades, with many of its new residents opting to move to the region because of its proximity to Dublin Airport, good commuter infrastucture and access roads namely the R132 and the M1 motorway.
As of 2006, Swords was rated the third largest town in Ireland with the census showing a population of 33,998.
